Key points
  • Family rules differ a lot by country, and several changed recently.
  • Australia now allows family on a student visa only in limited cases.
  • The UK allows dependants mainly for research degrees and government-sponsored students.
  • Every family member needs their own papers and their own funds shown.

Start with the hard question

Many married students ask the same thing: can my wife, husband or children come with me? The honest answer is that it depends on the country, the level of your course and sometimes who pays for it. In 2026 the rules are tighter than they were a few years ago.

This guide compares Canada, Australia, the UK and the USA using official pages. It does not promise a visa for you or your family. Rules and figures change, so confirm everything on the official page before you plan.

The short version: Canada allows family but limits the spouse work permit. Australia allows family only in limited cases. The UK allows dependants mainly for research degrees and government-sponsored students. The USA allows F-2 dependants who cannot work.

Canada: a partner work permit has conditions

In Canada each family member applies separately. A spouse who wants to work needs an open work permit, and this is now limited. Since 21 January 2025 the student must hold a valid study permit and be in a master's programme of 16 months or longer, a doctoral programme, or one of a listed set of professional degrees, such as medicine, law, pharmacy, nursing, education or engineering. A few provincial programmes are also listed.

A spouse of a student in a bachelor's or diploma programme is not on that list. The work permit is usually valid for the same period as the student's study permit.

A child who comes with a parent holding a study permit needs a study permit to go to school, and must apply before entering Canada. A child under 17 must come with a parent or have a custodian in Canada.

Australia: family is now allowed only in limited cases

From 2 October 2026 Home Affairs says student visa applicants can no longer include a partner or dependent children unless an exemption applies. This also covers a further student visa. A student who already holds a visa cannot add family later, and there are no exemptions to that rule.

The listed exemptions include PhD students, students sponsored by DFAT or Defence, foreign government scholarship holders, and eligible students from Pacific and ASEAN countries. Bangladesh is not an ASEAN member, so that nationality exemption does not apply to a Bangladeshi passport holder. Read the exact criteria on the Home Affairs page.

United Kingdom: only some students can bring dependants

Your partner and children under 18 can apply only if you are a government-sponsored student on a course longer than six months, or a full-time postgraduate student on a course of nine months or longer. If the postgraduate course starts on or after 1 January 2024, it must be a PhD or other doctorate, or a research-based higher degree. A normal taught master's degree does not meet this, so most taught-course students cannot bring family.

A partner proves the relationship with a marriage or civil partnership certificate. A child needs a birth certificate, must be unmarried and normally lives with you. Each person pays a visa fee.

USA: F-2 lets family stay, but not work

Your spouse and children can come as F-2 dependants. Your school official issues a separate Form I-20 for each of them, and each applies for an F-2 visa. F-2 dependants may not work and cannot get a Social Security number. They may study only less than a full course. An adult dependant who wants to study full time must file Form I-539 to change status to F-1 or M-1.

The US Embassy in Dhaka says children need their own passports and lists wedding photos as a useful document for a spouse applying as a derivative. The pages we opened do not state a dependant funds figure, so ask your school how much extra it expects.

Extra funds and papers for the family

Plan these for every country, then check the amounts on the official page:

  • Marriage registration and children's birth certificates, with names spelled exactly as in the passports.
  • A valid passport for each family member.
  • Canada, applications from 1 September 2026 outside Quebec, living costs per year: CAD 23,448 for one person, 29,192 for two, 35,888 for three, 43,572 for four. Tuition and transport are extra.
  • UK, per month for up to nine months: student £1,171 outside London or £1,529 in London. Each dependant £680 outside London or £845 in London. Money is held for 28 days.
  • Clear proof of where each sum came from. Officers look at the source of funds.
  • A school plan for each child. Ask the school before you pay any fee.

Be honest about the hard cases

If your course does not allow dependants, do not change your course only to bring family, and do not describe your family in a way that is untrue. UK guidance tells caseworkers to look carefully when benefits for dependants are a main reason for an application.

Many families choose that the student goes first and the family stays in Dhaka for a year. Do not build your budget on a spouse's earnings abroad, because work rights are limited or absent in several countries.

When IGC counsellors review a family case, we check your course level against each country's dependant rules, the funds needed for every person, the documents that prove the relationship, and whether the plan makes sense for your family. We will say clearly if the family cannot come under current rules.

Frequently asked questions

Can my husband or wife work if I study in Canada?

Only in limited cases. A spouse open work permit is available when the student is in a master's programme of 16 months or longer, a doctoral programme, or a listed professional degree. Check the IRCC page for your programme.

Can I bring my family on a UK student visa for a taught master's?

Usually no. Dependants are allowed for government-sponsored students on courses over six months, and for postgraduate students on PhD or research-based degrees starting from 1 January 2024. Confirm on the GOV.UK family members page.

Can my spouse work on an F-2 visa in the USA?

No. The official Study in the States page says F-2 dependants may not work and are not eligible for Social Security numbers. They may study only part time unless they change status. Confirm the latest rule with your school official.

Can I add my family to my Australian student visa after I arrive?

No. Home Affairs states that student visa holders can no longer add family members after the visa is granted, with no exemptions. Read the Home Affairs page on including or adding family members before you plan.
