MBBS Abroad for Bangladeshi Students 2026: What to Check First
- A foreign medical degree must be recognised by BMDC before you can use it in Bangladesh.
- Graduates of recognised foreign schools sit an exam set by BMDC and then do an internship.
- Do not pay any agent or university deposit before you have BMDC's position in writing.
- Compare total six-year cost from the university's own page, not from a brochure.
Start with Bangladesh, not with the country
Many families begin by asking which country is cheapest or easiest. A safer first question is: will Bangladesh accept this degree? Section 12 of the Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council Act, 2010 says a person with an undergraduate medical degree from an institution inside or outside Bangladesh must have that degree recognised by the Council before using it in Bangladesh.
The same section says that if the school is not already listed in the Act's schedules, the school or the graduate has to apply to the Council. If the degree is recognised by the medical council of the country where it was earned, the applicant sits an examination set by the Council. Those who pass are registered temporarily for an internship of a length the Council decides. The Act is published in Bangla on the Laws of Bangladesh website.
Think of it as a chain with four links: the school, the degree, the Council's decision and the exam. If any link is missing, the others do not help you. Ask about each link before you ask about hostels or the weather.
In short, a degree is only the first step. Recognition, an exam and an internship come after it. The exam format, dates and fees are published by BMDC on www.bmdc.org.bd and can change. We could not open that site for this article, so confirm the current rules with BMDC directly.
Do not pay anyone before you have this in writing
Early payments are the hardest to get back. For example, Semmelweis University in Hungary lists a 250 EUR application fee and a 2,000 EUR non-refundable deposit on its own admission page.
- Ask BMDC, not the agent, whether the university's degree is recognised or can be assessed.
- Get the answer in writing, with the date, before you pay any fee or deposit.
- Ask the university for its refund rules in writing.
- Be careful if someone says recognition is automatic or that the exam is easy.
- Ask what happens to your money if the degree is not accepted in Bangladesh.
The checks that matter for every country
A public list of medical schools exists, called the World Directory of Medical Schools. Look up the university yourself. Being listed there is useful, but it does not replace the decision of BMDC.
- Recognition: has BMDC recognised this school, or is there a clear way to apply?
- Language: lectures may be in English, but medicine is learned at the bedside. Ask which language patients speak in the teaching hospital and whether you must learn it.
- Clinical training: ask when it starts, which hospitals are used, and how many students share one supervisor. Ask to speak with a current Bangladeshi student or recent graduate.
- Rules of the destination country for foreign students and for medical degrees.
- Safety: read your own government's travel advice and the university's housing rules.
- Total cost: tuition for all years, one-time fees, housing, insurance, visa and flights.
What we could confirm for some countries
Students often ask about Russia, Georgia, China, the Philippines, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Hungary and Poland. We only state what we could read on an official page this month. Entrance tests, age limits and deadlines differ by university, so make a calendar for each school and apply early enough to avoid rushed decisions.
- Hungary: Semmelweis University lists General Medicine as a six-year programme taught in English. Its page shows 9,340 EUR per semester plus one-time fees. Applicants sit online tests in medical biology, medical chemistry and English, then an interview. The page prefers applicants under 30 and shows a deadline of 31 May 2027.
- Poland: the Medical University of Warsaw English Division programme is six years, three pre-clinical and three clinical, and is taught entirely in English, according to the Study in Poland portal. Fee figures on different pages did not match, so ask the university for the current schedule.
- China: an older notice on the Study in China portal said English-taught MBBS is offered by a list of Ministry of Education approved universities, 45 at that time. Lists change, so ask for the current official notice.
- Russia, Georgia, the Philippines, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan: we could not open an official page that confirms fees or entry rules, so we state none. Ask each university for its entry rules, fees and clinical placement details in writing.
Work out the real cost
A brochure may show one year's fee. MBBS usually runs for six years, so multiply. At the Semmelweis rate of 9,340 EUR a semester, 12 semesters come to 112,080 EUR in tuition if the fee never changes. That is before one-time fees, housing, food, insurance, travel and visa costs.
Fees and exchange rates move. Use only the figure on the university's own page, note the date you read it, and ask whether the fee can rise during the course.
Ask each school for a written fee schedule that covers all six years, with housing, insurance and exam fees listed separately. Then ask whether the cheapest housing shown is actually available to new foreign students.
A calm way for the family to decide
MBBS is a six-year commitment and a large family expense. Do not let a deadline from a salesperson rush you.
- Shortlist two or three schools, not ten.
- Write one list of questions and send the same list to every school and to BMDC.
- Keep every answer in writing, with the date.
- Compare total six-year cost and the position on recognition side by side.
- Wait a few days before paying anything, and ask a doctor you trust to read your notes.
What IGC counsellors check with you
When a student asks about MBBS, IGC counsellors go through the list above, ask you to confirm the BMDC position in writing, and tell you plainly where we cannot confirm a rule. We cannot promise admission, a visa or recognition.
Frequently asked questions
Is a foreign MBBS enough to practise in Bangladesh?
No. Under Section 12 of the BMDC Act, 2010 the degree must be recognised by the Council. A graduate of a recognised foreign school then sits an exam set by the Council and is registered temporarily for an internship.
Does a listing in the World Directory of Medical Schools mean BMDC recognition?
No. The directory is a public list of schools. BMDC makes its own decision on whether to recognise a degree for use in Bangladesh, so always ask BMDC separately.
Can an agent confirm recognition for me?
Only BMDC can confirm how it treats a degree. Ask for BMDC's answer in writing and keep a copy. Do not pay fees or deposits on an agent's word alone.
Should I pick the country with the lowest fee?
Not by fee alone. A cheaper course that BMDC does not recognise, or that has weak clinical training, can cost far more later. Compare recognition, teaching language, hospital training and total cost together.
