Student visa
Student Visa Interview Questions: US F-1 Guide for Bangladesh
- The officer must be satisfied that you are a real student with a temporary plan.
- Your answers must be your own truth. Memorised answers are a risk.
- Hand over a paper only when the officer asks for it.
- The UK and Australia test whether you are a genuine student too.
What the F-1 interview is testing
A consular officer decides whether you qualify for a student visa. The US Embassy in Dhaka explains that US law treats every applicant as an intending immigrant at first. Most applicants must show a valid temporary purpose, a plan to stay for a limited period, a residence in Bangladesh, and family, social and economic ties that point to a return. Refusals on this ground are often called section 214(b) refusals.
English skill is not a visa requirement. The embassy says its consular officers speak Bangla and will take your interview in Bangla or English.
Before interview day
Get the basics right first. Small mistakes here can cost you your appointment, and a new date can take time. Work through this list a week or more ahead, not the night before.
- Submit the DS-160 and update your online profile more than seven calendar days before the interview. The barcode number must match the one used to book, or you may not be allowed to attend.
- Bring your original Form I-20 with your ink signature, passport and old passports, DS-160 confirmation page, appointment letter, fee receipt and a photo that meets the rules.
- Useful extra papers are transcripts, test scores and three to twelve months of bank statements. The embassy says supporting documents are not strictly necessary and are often not reviewed, but you must know them well.
- The embassy instructs F visa applicants to set all social media accounts to public. Read your old posts and remove anything untrue.
- Friends, relatives and agents cannot attend the interview with you.
The five question groups
The pages we opened do not list the exact questions, and officers decide what to ask. In general, the questions fall into the same few areas. Expect these groups:
- Why the USA, this university and this course.
- Who pays, how they are related to you, and how they earn.
- Your studies so far, test scores and any gap in education.
- Your ties to Bangladesh: family, work, property, business.
- What you will do after you finish.
How to answer: a simple structure, not a script
The embassy asks you to be as detailed as possible. A useful pattern has three steps. Answer in one sentence. Give one real reason. Add one detail that only you would know.
For why this university, name the course feature or teacher you read about, say how it connects to your studies or work so far, and say how you will use it in Bangladesh. For funding, name the sponsor, say how they are related to you, how they earn, and how much is set aside for your first year. Know the numbers on your I-20.
For ties to Bangladesh, speak about real things: the family you live with, a family business, a job or study you will return to, property. Do not invent a job offer. For plans after study, say the field you want to work in, the kind of work, where, and why this degree is needed. If you are still deciding between two paths, say that honestly instead of reciting a polished story that is not yours.
If you do not know something, say so, or ask the officer to repeat the question. Do not guess. You may answer in Bangla if that helps you explain clearly.
Memorised answers are a risk
Answers must be your own truth. Recited answers sound unnatural, and they can fall apart when the officer asks one follow-up question. They can also clash with your DS-160 and your documents. Do not buy interview scripts or copy answers from videos.
The embassy warns that you are responsible for every document you present, even if an agent told you to bring it. If an officer suspects a document is fake, you will be refused and may receive a permanent ban from travel to the US.
UK and Australia: credibility-style checks
The UK uses a genuine student test. Caseworkers normally interview you before refusing on this ground. They look at immigration history, your study and post-study plans, knowledge of the course and institution, and the source of your funds. They must not refuse you only because you do not know local details such as bus routes.
Australia uses a Genuine Student requirement through written answers in the application form, limited to 150 words each. They ask about your ties and circumstances, why this course and provider, and how the course will help you. Statements backed by evidence carry more weight. Home Affairs says a genuine student's later interest in permanent residence does not count against them. Write these answers yourself.
Mistakes to avoid
Practise by explaining your plan aloud to a family member or a counsellor, in simple words, in under a minute each. Notice where you hesitate, because that is usually where your file needs more work.
Common mistakes are giving a pile of papers instead of the one asked for, telling a story that differs from your DS-160, not knowing your sponsor's income, and arguing with the officer. The embassy asks you not to argue. We did not find a dress code on the pages we opened, so neat, simple clothes are a sensible choice.
If you are refused, the embassy says you may apply again at any time, but it recommends waiting until your circumstances have changed. IGC counsellors hold a practice discussion and check that your answers match your file. We do not give scripts.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need good English to pass the F-1 interview?
The US Embassy in Dhaka says English competency is not a requirement for a visa and that officers can take the interview in Bangla or English. Answer clearly in the language where you can explain your plans best.
Can my parents come inside with me?
No. The embassy does not permit friends, relatives, attorneys or business contacts to attend the interview with the applicant. You must be ready to answer without in-person help, so your sponsor details must be known to you.
Should I learn answers by heart?
No. Learn your own facts, such as course details, sponsor income and plans. Recited answers can sound false and can contradict your documents. Practise explaining the same truth in different words.
Can I apply again after a refusal?
The embassy says you may reapply at any time but recommends waiting until your circumstances have changed. Read the reason given, fix the real cause, and do not repeat the same file.
